  Copyright and Linking information

Can I link to your page?

The short answer is "Yes".

I'm glad when someone finds my site useful and generally encourage linking. But thefts of my work have forced me to be more specific. Specifically I want it clear that my work is my work. It must be obvious to the viewer that pages, articles and images from my web site are on my web site, not your web site.

Do I need to get permission to link to your page?

No, not usually.

An ordinary link that transfers a person from your web site to mine is fine. You don't need permission to do that.

You can link to my web site without asking permission, but don't load the contents of my site so that it looks like it is part of your site. Sometimes this is done by using "frames" or "in-line" frames. The easy way to tell if your link is OK is to look at the address bar in the browser. If it shows my web site address then it is likely OK.

I want to use an image as part of the link to your site. Do you have an image I may use?

Yes. You have your choice of four images. You may copy any of these four images to your own site provided you use them solely for indicating a link to the Dog-Play web site. This is one image: http://www.dogplay.com/Images/license4.jpg Dog-Play license plate. This is another image: http://www.dogplay.com/Images/dpicon1.gif DogPlay Icon. This is another image: http://www.dogplay.com/Images/dpicon2.gif DogPlay Icon (transparent background). This is the last image: http://www.dogplay.com/Images/ticon3.gif Tanith Icon.

If you wish to support full access you may use the Full Access button
http://www.dogplay.com/Images/full_access.gif on your site.

You may not use any other image from my site, unless I give you express permission for that particular image. If I give you permission you must keep that permission on file as long as the work is publicly available.

Can I use your articles, lists or images on my web site?

You are not allowed to copy my content to your site, or any place on the internet. Not only is it copyright infringement, but Google, and other search engines, will down rank sites with duplicate content. If you copy my articles you risk harming both our listings with search engines. Even if it doesn't matter to you, it does matter to me. You may not copy my content to your site.

If you like what I have to offer you may use a link to my site. It always must be clear that the source of the image, article or other creative work is my web site.

Well I changed some words and added some stuff, so that makes it OK!

No, it does not.

Copying my articles and changing a few words or adding to it is still copyright infringement, and also plagiarism. See the articles Plagiarism vs. Copyright Infringement and What is Plagiarism?. Also see Opinion: Plagiarism, fair use and the link economy.

How can I get permission?

If you want to discuss reprint rights for physical print media, such as in a newsletter or pamphlet feel free to write to me. I often do give permission. See Help with Contacting DogPlay. I usually give permission for non-profit use for a single printing in physical form. In general, I do not charge a fee for that permission. You really must, however, be very specific as to the exact page(s) you wish to reprint. I have had many occasions when the request turns out to be for something that is not my work. I would be ashamed if I accidentally gave permission to reprint work that was not mine. Just be specific. The fact that I gave permission should be expressly stated on the same page as my work appears. You can use language like:
Permission to use granted by the author, Diane Blackman.

I rarely give permission to copy my work onto another web site. Please link to the article instead. Copying my material to your web page is a violation of copyright law unless you have my written permission.

What happens to violators?

I protect my service mark. Don't use the term DogPlay or Dog-Play as part of your business name. I take the reputation I have developed in my mark seriously. Getting involved in a mark battle is expensive. Don't use the terms DogPlay or Dog-Play in any way that could be confusing as to the source of information or advice on dogs, dog training, dog behavior, dog activities (just as examples).

I protect my copyrights. If necessary I will serve a DMCA notice on the web host. They will follow the law to protect themselves from liability. In enforcing my copyrights in the past that has included disabling the site. When an account holder has a past history of infringements the web host is likely to close the account.
